Editor’s Note:
While Charlie Rangel (D-NY) is investigated for ethics violations stemming from his tax returns and influence peddling, he wants every American to serve mandatory duty to the country in uniform or in civil support of law enforcement agencies like the DHS.

Jennifer Yachnin writes in part:
It has been 729 days since Rep. Charlie Rangel publicly appealed for an ethics investigation into his own actions. He’s still awaiting the outcome.
The New York Democrat, who has paid more than $1.5 million to date on legal fees, faces a multipronged investigation into his personal finances, living arrangements, fundraising efforts and even his use of a House parking space.
The investigation into Rangel, begun in July 2008, has yet to set a House record for longevity. But Congressional ethics observers acknowledge that nearly two years is nonetheless a lengthy inquiry.
Fox News reports just now: The Rangel investigation is formally bringing charges with multiple ethics violations today.
In light of these developments, on July 15, 2010, he filed HR 5741:
HR 5741
To require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service, either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, to authorize the induction of persons in the uniformed services during wartime to meet end strength requirements of the uniformed services, and for other purposes.

Talk about ironies, do as he says, not as he does. Yes I can smell the air of irony too. It reeks like rotting flesh.

Maybe a Constitutional Defense Force should be formed?
Can you imagine training all the gang-bangers how to use military weapons? Granted...it would get them off the street and under some sort of supervision that their parents are lacking in. It may even train some of these punks for some sort of job training. But what I see is a bunch of military trained thugs with big guns in their hands running lose robbing and killing. Oh God help us.
@Boe: Can you imagine someone who believes that such a great proposal would somehow lead to chaos? What I see is a loony, paranoid racist. Who do you think some of the people our current military attracts if not poor kids from the inner city?
@Observer: Yawn…Why don't you come up with something original and creative, instead of using the tired, inane, liberal charge of "racist" where it does not apply? There is racism in this life. It is a sin, among many others, common to the human condition. Liberals insist on trivializing the term for their own purpose..to try to shut down a debate they cannot win, and change the subject. Thugs come in all races and colors, as does tyranny. King George was white, and we threw off that yoke. It has nothing to do with race. btw…for whom might you be "observing"?
National enslavement. I'll turn my gun against the people mandating this before I submit to it.
I agree with Urutu. and I feel like a hail storm of new laws and legilation are being pelted on us daily. Of course, many unconstitutional.

This law is the footing for a civilian police force controlled by the POTUS. It must fail. States already have the right to mandate service in militias should they see fit. The DHS is far too powerful already and proven to be easily corrupted by the appointed person being able to set policy no different than the USAG and we see how dangerous that can be when a usurpation is under way. It would be like giving Janet Napolitano the ability to call out the national guard. It's bad enough she can pursue the policies of the SPLC without any oversight whatsoever.
